There is so much advise out there on how to get started on a healthy eating plan to lose weight that it can get confusing and overwhelming very quickly. Every “expert” has their own opinion of what plan works the best. Truth is NOTHING works best for EVERYONE. It really is a very personal process that is often trial and error, over and over again, until you find what works for you! What works in the beginning may not work in the middle, or at the end. There is always adjusting to be done along the way to your goal weight. Once your goal weight is achieved there is again adjustment that must be made. Get the picture? There is no ONE answer that you can rely on.
While all this is true, I did find a few healthy eating tips that really helped me get started.
→ Simplify! I believe counting calories is important when starting a weight loss journey, but you need to make it simple on yourself! If you start by trying to be obsessive you will get fed-up quickly. It takes a bit of time to make calorie counting something that comes naturally. You need stick to preparing foods that are easy to track, stick to the basics. Look for easy recipes that do not involve alot of ingredients and you will thank yourself when it comes to tally time. What you eat does not have to be complicated! The simpler you keep your diet in the beginning the easier it is to start adding new foods and ingredients without feeling like you are losing control of your calories.
→ Habits Take Time to Become Habits Not much in life happens overnight. We are human and we want fast results but few things materialize just because we want them to. Eating healthy to lose and then maintain weight has to become a habit. We often associate the word habit as something bad that we do … start thinking about it the opposite way. Once you get into the routine of eating healthy and exercising regularly you will be amazed at how much it becomes a habit, a GOOD one! Don’t get down on yourself if it takes you a little bit of time to make this habit stick. Habits are not only what we do, they are often a part of who we are. On average is it said that it takes between 21 and 66 days to form a habit, so you just need to keep working at it!
→ Every Positive Change Counts! When attempting to lose weight every time you make the right decision it really does count! You do not have to eat perfectly or exercise until you drop to lose weight. Restricting your diet and never allowing yourself to enjoy foods you love will only cause you to have a harder time sticking to a healthy eating plan, a good balance is key! Every time you make the decision to go to the gym, eat a well balanced meal, take a walk, skip that glass of wine, you are making steps towards your goals. No matter how small the decision seems it really does make a difference in your rate of success. I like to think about each healthy decision I make as just that, a step toward my goal. Keeping focused on the small things can take your mind off how far away the big picture often seems. Before you know i,t all the small positive changes you make will add up and equal results!
Getting started is tough and anyone who says they can just do it overnight and never falter is not the norm. Start over as many times as you need to but just keep at it and you will start to reap the rewards of your efforts!
