Running

Let me first start by saying that I am not an avid runner.  I envy greatly those people who can lace up their sneakers and just go out there and run for miles and miles and actually enjoy it.  With that being said, I do add running into my workout routines and running does work for weight loss.

Running, like it or not, is one of the best butt-kicking, calorie-blasting workouts you can add to your fitness routine.  Running benefits almost every part of your body and can actually greatly elevate your mood.  I do know that even if I do not enjoy every minute of a run, I am always in a better mood after I am finished.

THE BENEFITS

Running Can Improve Your Overall Health
Running is a great way to increase your overall level of health.  Research shows that running can raise your levels of good cholesterol while also helping you increase lung function and use.  Distance and speed may not be the key, but as with almost everything consistancy is.

Running Can Help Prevent Disease
Running can reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and even heart attacks. Running helps the arteries retain their elasticity thereby strengthening the heart.

Running Helps You Lose Weight
Running is one of the best forms of exercise for losing or maintaining a consistent weight.  It is a leading way to burn calories and we all know that is a major key to weight loss overall.

Running Can Boost Your Confidence
Not all of the benefits of running are physical.  Running can boost your confidence and self-esteem.  When you set and achieve individual goals, you gaint a feeling of accomplishment that can leave you feeling happier and satisified with yourself and your efforts.

Running Can Help Relieve Stress
Stress effects us all in one way or another and has an impact on our health and fitness goals.  Running forces your body to exert excess energy and hormones.  Running can allow you much needed time alone with your thoughts … you may be surprized how much you will be able to think through as your feet hit the pavement or the treadmill track.

Running Can Help Elevate Mood and Combat Depression
If you have ever found yourself in a depressed state you know that likely the last thing you want to do is get up and go for a run.  However, even after just a few minutes into in you will likely find your mood starting to elevate.  This is because your brain starts to secrete hormones that naturally improve your mood.  I know I can always use a little mood lifiting as I have suffered from depression for most of my life.

These are only a few of the ways that running can improve both your physical and mental health.  The bottom line is that it does not matter the duration or speed … adding even short runs to your exercise routine can help you lose weight, elevate your mood, and bring you closer to overall better health.
